The whole purpose of unsubscribing from marketing emails is so that I DON'T get marketing emails... apparently @Citibank and @AmericanAir think I want marketing emails (sent as transactional email) to get me to re-subscribe to their marketing emails?!?!

On today’s #TransDayOfVisibility you can join me in being horrified that in some states firing someone for being trans is perfectly legal.

With #Christmas around the corner, you may give or receive new cell phones. Please do not give your old, unregistered phone to a child to play with. Just because you don't have a cell plan on it, it can still call 911! #TuesdayTip #RedDeer911

Can I give a few pro tips to anyone doing a technical interview? 1. If the interviewer seems to be nudging you or asking a leading question, that's not a cue to shoot them down or ignore the hint. 2. Do not start talking and then talk continuously without pause. Ask questions.

Does SRE/DevOps count? I can’t stand coffee, smell or taste.

RT if you’re a developer and *don’t* drink coffee. We’re talking about breaking developer stereotypes 👇

Using @grafana to dashboard your 2021 countdown might be the most SRE thing ever. This is what happens when you sequester nerds for a NYE party. With @TechyTy and @edarc

After being through a few of these changes myself, I wholeheartedly agree!! I nearly fell into this trap, and struggled with imposter syndrome with each change, but the feeling of powering through those feelings and proving yourself is so much more fulfilling than familiarity.

questionable advice: "i'm the most senior engineer at my company, i spend all my time unblocking others instead of writing code myself. what should i do? (p.s. it's my first job.)" charity.wtf/2020/11/01/que…

Louder for the people in the back!! 👏👏👏

Absofuckinlutely. If you are on call, you get to poke around and fix anything that's been bugging you. No project work. Period.

‘Separation/Segregation of Duties’ are not words I find in the regulations. Starts to show up in ‘Frameworks’ as a principle but not a prescription. The idea that developers cannot deploy to or troubleshoot production is a clumsy self inflicted interpretation. We can do better.

This sounds like a nice healthy on-call experience! My team operates similarly, though without the extra pay. We can take time off if we have a busy week, and my recent week on primary I got 0 out of hours pages.

I've been on call this week. We have a six week rotation. I've been paid extra to have my laptop at hand, but not needed to actually spend any time working out of hours. Were I to be paged, I'd get time off in lieu.

Agreed. It’s applicable to organisations of all sizes. Though it’s important that teams own their components and have the agency to fix issues to ensure they have a positive on call experience. Reducing on call noise/alert fatigue trumps feature work.

Some of the best Engineering cultures I've worked in had EVERYBODY in Engineering be on-call, all the way up to the CTO... because prod is everyones responsibility... without prod/customers, why bother showing up to work?

saying devs are "too valuable" to be on call is nothing but thinly disguised engineering classism. if you're not on call for your code, who is? who are you forcing to wake up for the consequences of your actions? do they get paid more than you, or less than you? i rest my case.
