God’s discipline should always be welcomed because, as a loving Father, God’s motivation is always for our good. He aims for our maturity. Don’t let the modern culture of absentee fathers who let their children run free confuse you. God is a real Father. He cares & disciplines.
God’s skill at making “all things work together for good” is breathtaking & not to be overlooked. It’s vital that none of us sees ourselves at the centre of the universe & that everything works for our personal fulfilment, yet God’s ability to care for his own is overwhelming!
“On the night Jesus was betrayed”, when everything looked disastrously wrong & it seemed Satan was powerfully in charge, “Jesus took bread & broke it”. The sovereign Saviour was secure & focused, filled with love & compassion for those he came to save, about to utterly triumph.
“YHWH make his face shine upon you.” A God with a face. Personal, knowable, relational, wanting to be known. Yet awesome, thoroughly self sufficient, majestic in glory, concealed in unimaginable light. He’s offering “face-shining” fellowship.
“Many, O YHWH my God are the wonders you’ve done & your thoughts toward us; there’s none to compare with you, if I would declare & speak of them, they’d be too numerous to count.” Ps40:5. I’ve been massively blessed by the Lord this week & then find myself in Ps40. What a God!
Off to Portugal today, speaking at a leadership conference this weekend.
As a reformer wanting to restore the church I’ve often had to confront “traditions” but Paul praised the Corinthians for holding them firm. 1Co11:2. Not man-made traditions or simply Paul’s personal preference but rooted in creation, fundamental to God’s own purpose. 1Ti2:11-14.
(On this day. Because of the gospel.)
"God Almighty has placed before me two great objects: the suppression of the Slave Trade and the Reformation of Manners." - William Wilberforce, 28 October 1787 The good news is: He did it.
To live is Christ & to die is gain. Paul’s statement is easier said than done. To LIVE CHRIST! Having his mind & attitude, always putting other’s needs before your own, willing to suffer for others, not insisting on your own way. Being a Christ follower is no joke. It’s massive!
We must distinguish between a God given vision & simply living in a dream world. If God has spoken, depend on his utter faithfulness. If we’re projecting our own desires & ambitions we’ll come unstuck. “Don’t despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast the good” 1Th5:12.
Although Sunday isn’t the OT Sabbath with all of its rules & prohibitions, it does provide us with the opportunity not only to rest from work but to engage with God & his people, to feed on his word & worship with the saints. Don’t neglect the opportunity to be refreshed in God.
Looking forward to being there.
Join us in church tomorrow morning for our #sundayservice, when we're delighted to have @TerryVirgo from @Newfrontiers with us. Bring your friends and we'll see you there! #Epsom
It’s good to overflow with thanksgiving to God, honouring him as your provider in everything. Many regard faith as difficult & challenging, acknowledging that they’re not strong in faith. Giving thanks builds faith & makes you aware of God’s personal involvement in your life.
I enjoyed doing this fascinating interview.
What does it really mean to be a reformer in the Church? Many evangelicals laud the legacy of the Protestant reformation whilst holding very tightly to particular traditions and practices within their churches which can, over time, drift further and further away from Biblical…
Looking forward to being with & preaching for The Kings Church, Epsom this coming Sunday.
Rather confrontational in style & controversial in content but a helpful & fascinating study of 1 Corinthians 15.
Paul describes the Christian life as a fight or a race. 1Co9:26. It’s not a dawdle or even a jog or a hobby. He speaks of a prize to be gained but somehow combined that urgency with extraordinary peace & overflowing joy. His zeal didn’t make him intense, aggressive or ugly.
Paul was thoroughly intransigent about the content of the gospel for which he fought tenaciously, but he was willing to be all things to all men that he might by all means save some. 1Co9:22. Vital to know & show flexibility but essential we understand where it starts & stops!
Paul was free from the Law, but a slave of Christ; not in bondage to rules & regulations but totally belonging to Jesus as a slave to his master. A personal relationship of love completely transcending mere impersonal religion. Who wants religion when you’ve found Christ?
So stimulating & inspiring to read of such a courageous, clear thinking man from another deeply challenging time under the shadow of Hitler’s Nazi threat live out his obedience to Christ.
