We're moving to a better place and will no longer be posting on X. The direction of this platform simply does not align with what we're looking to achieve. In future, you can find us at @ tlearnn.bluesky.social
Read our response to the National Review of #HEStudentSuicide deaths published last week. We support both the prevention and postvention recommendations, but the sector must do more, faster, and the government must hold it to account by statute/regulation. thelearnnetwork.org.uk/post/national-…
This is an important report from @NCISH_UK. #StudentSuicide numbers are not dropping. We need @jacqui_smith to make this research a process, not a snapshot, repeating it at least every two years to track #HEP plans into action to prevent future suicides among #HE students.
Our @NCISH_UK conclusions and recommendations to help prevent future deaths are focused on (1) safety concerns, (2) suicide prevention within university systems, (3) amendments to the UUK/PAPYRUS/Samaritans guidance, and (4) safety messages for the wider system
Infographic summary of our report today on student suicide. We want universities to see students struggling academically as possibly struggling with mental health. Suicide safety is about compassion, culture & leadership. @NCISH_UK
I'm quoted in this piece in @timeshighered on behalf of @TheLearnNetwork on the National review of #StudentSuicides.
Bereaved families say they feel “vindicated” after a major report concluded they had been “excluded” by universities during investigations into student suicides, with institutions frequently “evasive and reluctant to answer important and painful questions” timeshighereducation.com/news/families-…
The team at @NCISH_UK has published the full #NationaReviewofHigherEducationStudentSucideDeaths report on their site. The full report, an infographic and a short animated video of the key findings are all available to download from there. sites.manchester.ac.uk/ncish/reports/…
A considered report from #Wonkhe on #NationalStudentSuicideReview. As a parent bereaved by student suicide, it's sad to see the situation has changed little in the past 7 years since we lost Rory. We need a legal #DutyofCare now. wonkhe.com/blogs/a-review…

A review of student suicides suggests that standards are now necessary
A national review has found a raft of issues in the way that universities prevent and learn from student suicides. Jim Dickinson evaluates whether voluntary urges for change will ever be enough.
This is what student advocacy actually looks like. Not shouting. Not grandstanding. Just a clear, calm request: ‘Can we meet?’ That’s how accountability begins. youtube.com/shorts/mN8o2rX…

Duty of Care in Higher Education providers
Why should anyone have access to self harm and suicide social media sites? The very minimum big tech can do is block access for children. The new @Ofcom rules fall short of what society needs in order to protect our young people.
theolliefoundation.org/what-we-do/pre… This aspect is so very important too ...
Thanks to @philippirie's persistence, NHS guidance to health professionals on assessing suicide risk has changed. Risk assessment tools such as tick-box questionnaires don't work, but persist. Focus on the individual: not on flawed assessment of risk. ft.com/content/eeb12c…
Great to keep the conversation going with government on #StatutoryDutyofCare in #HE but disappointing that the Minister tasked with suicide prevention does not see it as part of his remit. We desperately need more joined-up government @SKinnock and @Jacqui_Smith1.
At Portcullis Hse to meet @SKinnock presenting our reasons for a Statutory Duty of Care at #universities. With one standard & a law to ensure unis ‘act reasonably’ in any relevant situation would help #MentalHealth & reduce #suicides. Everywhere else has the same law, it is so…
We're approaching the end of #UniversityMentalHealthDay, an annual event focused on bringing together the #HE community to create & drive change for the future of student & staff mental health. It's still well worth checking out unimentalhealthday.co.uk for great tips and advice.
