1/n Shareholders may have little sway over companies with supervoting founders, but public image still matters and influential journalists can play a very important role in exposing misallocation of capital and misguided strategy.
There are plenty of other companies run in a similar way, where supervoting founders with unilateral authority misallocate resources and misguide corporate strategy. It would be great to see more articles like Alex’s, which can hopefully catalyze improvement.
Does Snap make sense as a standalone company? While I don’t think Spiegel has any desire to sell, a logical acquirer would be Microsoft, given its strong desire to have more touchpoints with consumers and its attempts at buying TikTok and Discord. Apple is not one to make big…
Data from @AntennaData shows channel stores and OS's increasingly controlling SVOD distribution. Among the 10 large SVODs, 2/3 of subscriber growth from '20-'23 came via a distributor. Ease of billing, more efficient/targeted marketing, and a content-first UX explain this shift.
Amazon Channels' dominance as a distributor of the long-tail of SVOD services also stands out. First mover status and cross-platform functionality likely explain some of this lead.
But my suspicion is that a more aggressive subscription promo strategy drives a lot of the subscriber acquisition, which would help explain the elevated churn on Channels.
1/n Charter seemingly doesn’t understand its role in the new video ecosystem, arguing it should be the bundler of streaming content.
At this point, it has become clear that many subscale streaming services are not viable standalone products. At the same time, the accelerating decline of the cable bundle is pressuring legacy revenue streams.
Charter is right that content companies need new bundle partners. They are just wishfully wrong on who that partner is.
Disney rejected Charter’s proposal because in this day and age a broadband provider has no reason to be the bundler or marketer of video products ir.charter.com/static-files/0…
If Charter sticks to its word this should be a very important moment for cord cutting and the shift to streaming TV
"We benefited greatly from the distribution support in the old business model from cable and satellite. Obviously, when you go DTC, you're kind of doing it on your own...or maybe there's an opportunity with another entity to help in that regard." - @RobertIger
In the old business model, what was important about cable and satellite was less the distribution infrastructure, and more that they were consumer touchpoint. In the new model, the consumer touchpoint is very clearly the TV operating systems.
@stratechery alludes to this point when he refers to big tech and Roku as potential partners.
Interesting that sports were historically part of a base cable package, and scripted content was a premium add-on. Now, scripted content is part of the base package, and sports may become the premium add-on. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Warner Bros. Discovery Considers Adding Sports Tier to Max Service

1/n @RobertIger spoke about Disney’s strategy with @davidfaber on CNBC today. In short, he appears to want to exit linear TV and double down on streaming and sports.
If Iger is serious about setting a foundation to win in streaming, controlling the OS is the best way to do it.
Netflix was making far more money on Standard with Ads ($6.99+Ads) than it was on Basic ($9.99, ad free), hence the decision to eliminate the Basic plan. This creates more space for Netflix to raise the monthly fee for SWA, and ultimately introduce a FAST/AVOD tier below that.
1/n What could a Netflix free tier look like and what would it do for Netflix? Some speculation...
1/n Amazon Prime Video incorporating Freevee content into its app is a great way to double dip and introduce ads into an SVOD experience.
