Seconded. And yes, the book’s excellent.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Stephen Applebaum - a fine man and a terrific writer. If you're unfamiliar with the man and his passion for film, I can't recommend his Wicker Man book highly enough. #stephenapplebaum amazon.co.uk/Wicker-Man-Con…

One of the first supporters of my work passed away. Stephen Applebaum. I don’t have any words for it, I talked to him a few weeks ago when I found out his cancer was back. May his memory be a blessing.

Superb production of #Othello at @The_Globe yesterday, with Ken Nwosu outstanding. I didn’t think it would work in its updated Met setting, but it did.

Thread.

When you write a tweet you NEVER know what reaction you're going to get, from good, to bad, to the absolutely batshit crazy. If you ever needed proof that you can't please all of the people, all of the time, these are some of my favourite reactions to tweets I've written. THREAD

The intellectual dishonesty in this series of tweets won't be unfamiliar to students of the Stalinist parties after WW2. Katyn? The Sling trials? Rajk? Never mind the hard evidence of atrocity let's consider the motive for presenting it, or some of the language used.

I also attended this screening and, as Giles says, the footage was distressing. It also confirmed my belief it should be passed to news organisations who can verify & report it independently as opposed to it being packaged by IDF and shown to influencers who can tweet afterwards.

Judi Dench was on Graham Norton last night to push her new book about her life and work with Shakespeare. After making the point we quote Shakespeare daily without knowing it, this happened:

It’s all coming out in the open now. Hatred of Jews which has been simmering in people who kept quiet before, but who finally believe they have an excuse to let it boil over. Utterly horrifying.

I try to avoid criticising my former employer. I also support the freedom of opinion writers to write whatever they believe. But it is also my right to say: wow, this is intellectually, historically and morally bankrupt

All of us in the UK who are not Jewish - an immense, an overwhelming majority - have a responsibility in these troubled times to make our Jewish fellow-citizens feel valued & safe. A responsibility that clearly right now we are failing to meet. It shames the country.
