What a great resource for professional development @NCCATNews is for teachers in NC! #NCCATOnline

NC *is* demonstrating its support for its teachers.

Standardized testing is a relic of the 20th century, when knowledge acquisition and retention was the driving purpose for schools. The internet has rendered that model completely obsolete. 1/8

Those of us with ADHD have long sought refuge in daydreams. Task avoidance is a (maladaptive) coping mechanism that becomes second nature and is a self-reinforcing behavior. The behaviors of task avoidance are often daydreams in action.

Standardized testing is a relic of the 20th century, when knowledge acquisition and retention was the driving purpose for schools. The internet has rendered that model completely obsolete. 1/8

I wish schools had the resources to do all 4 of these. But obedience and worksheets accomplish the goals of the outdated factory-model of education better, I suppose.

Four Non-Negotiables for Schools: 1. They are a welcoming & warm environment. 2. They develop students as good people & learners. 3. They model the learning they expect from their students. 4. They stoke curiosity, not extinguish it. - @gcouros #CCIRA20

No worksheet in the history of worksheets has inspired a kid or changed their life. #teachergoals

I wish that teachers and schools had the latitude to employ a mastery approach. Products and assessments should be as much a learning experience as anything else in the classroom. #Masterylearning #edchat

Please get the behavior / clip / stop light charts off of the wall! My behavior is not a decoration for your classroom. Humiliation & embarrassment are NOT valid classroom management / behavior strategies. #edchat #thatonekid #kidsdeserveit #tlap #culturize #leapeffect

Yes, yes, yes! I’ve seen some terribly-written and factually incorrect materials come home with my child and it infuriates me to no end! Of course, there was a strong negative correlation between the quantity of poor materials used and the quality of the teachers overall.

In theory, yes. In practice, no. Teachers are responsible for preparing too many students with too few resources for continual, mandated assessments. There is no time to model reading for pleasure.

Unfortunately, teachers have no time to teach handwriting because they are too busy with administering mandated, continual assessments. By the time it becomes problematic such that intervention is requested, many OT's will tell you that it's too late.

Unfortunately, most schools do not make time for explicit handwriting instruction. Kids never learn proper letter formation and proper pencil grip. Handwriting must be taught explicitly, monitored, and corrected in the early years.

When kids know they have a safe place to go and a person who always has their back, they shift their outlook on life & know there’s hope. All kids need to feel safe, accepted and know someone cares. Then they can believe in themselves & the learning will come. #allkidsmatter

Want to create bad behavior in a child? Give him a goal he knows he must reach (like learn how to read). Make the goal unattainable (provide faulty instruction). Make it impossible for him to escape this assault on his self-worth (demand school attendance). Watch it happen.

“Captain Underpants” and “Dog Man” author Dav Pilkey tells @JennaBushHager how as a kid his ADHD and dyslexia led to him spending a lot of time alone in the hallway at school – that’s when he started drawing and created the character “Captain Underpants.”
