Lots of sea ice as we approached the Antarctic Circle or Polar Circle. The ship would crash into the ice and break open a pathway for the ship to sail through. Our ship was a Russian icebreaking vessel.

A mama penguin has just gone down the cliff into the ocean and swallowed up a belly full of krill. Then she climbs up the cliff to where her chick is safely waiting for her (out of reach from predators) and she regurgitates her food into the mouth of the chick. Dinner time!

This is where the glacier meets the sea in Paradise Bay. I think this looks like where Elsa from the movie Frozen might have lived.

There are two types of ice in Antarctica. First, you will see the iceberg in the back of the photo that broke off from the glacier on the mountain. The second kind is “sea” ice. That’s when the surface of the ocean freezes. The flat, floating ice in the foreground is sea ice.

Lots of icebergs in Antarctica. Most of the time, the part you see above the water is actually only 20-30% of the total iceberg. The rest of it is underwater.

We made our first landing onto the continent of Antarctica. We landed on a rocky beach where saw a colony of Gentoo penguins-more than 1000

WGES: It is expected to be zero degrees Celsius when we land in Antarctica. How much is that in Fahrenheit?

Made it safely to Punta Arenas at the southern tip of South America. Leaving this morning for King George island off the coast of Antarctica. Our flight was originally delayed for weather but now it’s back on. 90-minute flight.

WGES: It’s winter time in Texas but it’s summer time in South America. Why?

Made it to Santiago after a 9-hour flight from Houston. 3.5 hour layover now, then off to Punta Arenas at the southern tip of South America
