Hahahah we have fun
Let’s talk about the Title Card for a second. Every episode it gets a little more bloody. But what does this mean? Is it just meant to symbolize that the show is getting bloodier? That’s certainly a part of it. But to my mind it also represents the bloodying of Mark’s soul.
And then we get the violence that ends episode 1. The Guardians of the Globe are decimated. And the show avoids telling us the reason why. 6 minutes into episode 2 we have mass civilian casualties and tons of blood. And Mark avoiding a fight because he’s in shock at the brutality
And in fact most of signature grotesque violence that the show has become known for is not present in the pilot. There’s not a single civilian who dies in the opening episode. Not a single villain who’s unnecessarily maimed beyond the aforementioned Mauler. And he heals later
Until the final sequence. We start to see the the brutality when The Immortal kills a villain who’s about to nuke Denver by throwing him into Space. In fact the perfect way to avoid a prolonged battle.
It’s also fascinating that this is the least violent and brutal takedown of the entire show. A Mauler Twin loses an eye, but only before the superheroes show up.
Omni-Man shows up halfway through the fight. And he doesn’t do any fighting. All he does is save people. We don’t see any great feats of durability from him, in fact, Darkwing needlessly saves him from falling debris. Because the show is avoiding showing you his true power
And instead of giving you Invincible or at least his amazing father Omni-Man, the show gives you the Guardians of the Globe (and noticeably not the President of the United States, even though this is an attack on the White House.)
In fact the opening scene of the show is a MasterClass in avoidance. Instead of giving you the superheroes that you came for, it gives a pair of regular guys, who are talking about their desire to avoid superhuman evasion training.
Arguably, avoidance is the CENTRAL theme. Don’t believe me? Let’s just take the name of the show. For the most part the audience isn’t even allowed to hear the word “Invincible”. It happens a few times, but for the most part it’s avoided, so that the title card can do it instead.
Spoilers for the first season to follow. Invincible season 1 is a show all about avoidance. The narrative avoids telling you why Omni-Man kills the Guardians. Mark avoids telling Amber his secret identity. The Mauler Twins avoid knowing which one is the original.
So last week on @ViewerDigress we reviewed Amazon Prime’s @InvincibleHQ . We got into some pretty interesting discussion but there were a few aspects and themes we didn’t get into. So today, let’s talk about one of these themes in particular: Avoidance.
