Charlotte du Val d’Ognes (1801) believed to be the work of Marie-Denise Villers (1774–1821).
Mark Twain got his name from a riverboat term for two fathoms, or 12 feet, of water, which was a safe depth for a steamboat to navigate on the Mississippi River. The phrase means "mark" (measure) and "twain" (two), signifying that the water was deep enough to proceed safely.
