The #WFIRST primary mirror is 2.4 meters - the same size as the mirror of #Hubble. But, the camera of WFIRST will have 18 large detectors, each one much larger than #Hubble's infrared camera. #WFIRST will therefore see 100x as much of the Universe as #Hubble does in every image!

Separate from surveys to measure the history of dark energy & distribution of exoplanets around stars, #WFIRST will be a community observatory. Any scientist can write a proposal for WFIRST time to advance their solar system, stellar, galactic, and extragalactic astrophysics.

The primary #WFIRST survey of 2000 sq deg at high-resolution and depth will completely overlap the #LSST survey. The joint data from these two projects will enable panchromatic imaging from ultraviolet-optical-infrared for hundreds of millions of objects.

A high-res animation of how the Universe formed and quickly expanded in the Big Bang, put together by @ScottWiessinger and the team at @NASAGoddard. The expansion is driven by a mysterious force called "dark energy", something #WFIRST will measure. svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/12656

Simulated #WFIRST image near the Galactic center that is 1500x smaller than the actual WFIRST microlensing survey! In addition to finding 1000+ exoplanets that orbit their planets beyond the #Kepler and #TESS sensitivity region, #WFIRST will enable seismology of 1 million stars

One of the most impressive surveys on #WFIRST will be the "deep supernova" fields. In addition to discovering 1000+ supernovae at large redshifts for cosmology, these deep fields will reach 29th mag over multiple sq deg. Imaging the #Hubble deep fields over 1000x the area!

The "High Latitude Survey" on #WFIRST will image 2000 sq deg at #Hubble-like 0.1 arcsec resolution, down to Hubble-like depth (27th mag). This survey will address fundamental questions about dark energy so we can understand the Universe's end fate!

Similar to previous and upcoming Great Observatories such as #Hubble, #Spitzer, #Chandra, #JWST, #WFIRST will be an observatory for the entire scientific community. Anybody can propose to use the telescope to advance our knowledge of the Universe.

Galaxies grow by accreting their neighbors. With #Hubble, we've seen some specific events in a few nearby galaxies. With #WFIRST and its 100x larger field of view, we will build the first large scale maps of galaxy halos for all nearby galaxies, and trace their fossil assembly

Striking animation of how #WFIRST will measure the impact of dark matter on visible light. Galaxy clusters warps space-time and bend the light from bkgnd galaxies. #WFIRST will obtain #Hubble quality images across the entire extent of 100s of clusters, svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/20244

One of the primary objectives of #WFIRST is to determine the end fate of our Universe. #WFIRST will map and measure millions of galaxy shapes, positions, and distances to establish the expansion history and growth of structure in the Universe.

#WFIRST is unique among all previous telescopes, including #Hubble and #JWST. For the first time, we can build high-definition maps of the Universe. Imagine seeing #Hubble's beautiful pencil beam images over 1000s of square degrees! #mindblown #MaptheUniverse
