im bad at estimating.

Just spent the last hour debugging my Python code... turns out I accidentally wrote "import beer" instead of "import math". Time for a well-deserved brewski! #pythonproblems #developerslife

We all do our part

MelkeyDev's tweet image. We all do our part

Indeed. My dev day feels like a never ending chain of failures with short moments of success. Then all of a sudden, sort of magically, a new working feature appears.

“Progress is made by trial and failure; the failures are generally a hundred times more numerous than the successes; yet they are usually left unchronicled.” – WILLIAM RAMSAY

Feedback effects: Google initially relied on the (human-curated) link structure of the internet to derive "importance" signals from the internet graph. As people started using Google instead of links, Google accidentally destroyed the fabric that provided the value.

If it’s not the first, it’s the second.

interviewing is the worst. i just hang up the phone if i don't know

it's amazing how far you can get by simply working hard and being nice

Every new job brings with it the same trio of foes: flaky E2E tests, a brittle local dev environment, and docs that only cover a mere 30% of the knowledge I actually need. It's a battle I fight all too often 😮‍💨

That’s… actually quite nice 🙌 Haven’t even thought #ChatGPT could do that.

I'm terrible at writing concise UI copy. ChatGPT to the rescue.

Sci-fi got it wrong. We assumed AI would be super logical and humans would provide creativity. But in reality it’s the opposite. Generative AI is good at getting an approximately correct output, but if you need precision and accuracy you need a human.

The future of artificial intelligence remains unknown. Though AI Winter❄️ is definitely over.

It’s difficult to make predictions, especially about the future. Still, you can feel that something's in the air. Things will shift in unimaginable ways.

Anyone paying attention to tech Twitter: the radical jump in text AI with ChatGPT is remarkable. The second and third order effects of this tech spreading everywhere will be fascinating. It will surely have consequences for media consumption & online interactions/incentives:

There's a fun discussion on Reddit about GPT power and its ability to replace programmers: reddit.com/r/GPT3/comment… Personally, I feel like each year as a web dev means less and less actual programming and more and more reading the code & docs, and working things out with ppl

H: After all those years? S: Always.

good software feels like magic

There are companies run by headless chickens, where you spend half of the time playing ping-pong and FIFA. And there’s the revamped Twitter, the modern coal mine:

If you’re applying, know what you’re getting into: - Can be fired anytime (and many will be). Exercise caution if you are on a visa - Managers code at least 20% of their time + manage 20+ ppl. - Working over the weekend common - Very strict PTO policy - Lots of stress, in general
