Today, the Council will hear testimony on the bill with supermajority support to end solitary confinement in New York City once and for all. Locking people away for weeks or months does not keep us safe. Torture by any name cannot stand, and this Council must lead the way.

Whether that’s the fault of @NYCMayor, DOE or the Council depends on who you ask, and it’s not entirely clear yet. But the system allows for a better flow of accurate information before votes are cast.

It would appear that there are downsides to rushing a budget deal that didn’t have to be done that early. Council members should be in full possession of information before voting on a $101B budget- arguably their biggest charter-mandated responsibility.
