Startup your pc in Safe Mode to discover if there are weird things going on. After this startup see if things are running smoother
Be sure that you don't have a virus or malware infection. Try the online scanner of Kaspersky or the Microsoft Safety Scanner
Make at least one image backup of your whole system. In case of a total harddisk failure you can repair a complete system again.
Check your registry regularly with a solid piece of software. CCleaner is free but Registry Booster from Uniblue is the best paid
Defrag your System(s) on regular basis. It will push up the seek time of files. Use free Defraggler
Check your harddrive for errors once in a while because of error or even damaged files, clusters or sectors
