You can get a long way in politics by appealing to people's worst instincts. What a great politician would do is appeal to people's equally genuine instinct to do good, and provide them with examples of what the good looks like, and help make it possible.
When people make comparisons with what went on in Germany in the 1930s, I refer to these words from the Auschwitz Museum to judge if there is some truth in their claim.
