Krasznahorkai made his literary debut around the age of 31 with Satantango. As first novels go, few arrive so fully formed of voice and talent. The length of his sentences developed over time, but they've always been expansive and musical like in Satantango's opening lines:

I read two or three sentences by Claudio Magris recently and instantly loved him. This feels like writing for writing’s sake, it has a subject because one needs one, of course, but it could just as well have been about something else
