Meditation XVIII: “The Remedies of Sadness” As the month of saints & souls unfolds, we turn to St Thomas Aquinas for wisdom on healing the heaviness of the heart. Delight, tears, friendship, contemplation, rest, and love-in-work—each a grace that restores joy in God.

Some may not like my views on Mary: ✅Theotokos ✅Second Eve ✅New Ark ✅Mother of the Elect ✅Perpetual Virginity ✅Immaculate Conception ✅Bodily Assumption ✅Queen of Heaven ✅Mediatrix of all graces: let me explain ✅Co-Redemptrix: try not to panic, this is in St Paul

I’ll play along: Theotokos: yes Second Eve: yes New Ark: yes Mother of the Elect: yes Perpetual Virginity: Yes Immaculate Conception: possibly Bodily Assumption: possibly Queen of Heaven: like all the bride of Christ Mediatrix of all graces: You nuts? Co-Redemptrix: hell no.

This looks amazing. Some of my favorite people on this panel.

Has Catholic theology lost its way?

Having attended the taping of the episode, I can attest that it will be a superb video. Every Catholic should watch it. Thanks, Bishop Barron!

The move away from co-redemptrix was expected. What is welcome and surprising is the qualified approval of Mary as “Mediatrix.” Though the church gives preference and priority to the term “mother of all graces” it offers an orthodox way of understanding Mary as Mediatrix.

Vatican released “Mater Populi Fidelis” declaring ‘Given the necessity of explaining Mary’s subordinate role to Christ in the work of Redemption, it would not be appropriate to use the title “Co-redemptrix” to define Mary’s cooperation’. vatican.va/roman_curia/co…

TDLR: What Mater Populi fidelis doesn't say: ❌Mary is not Co-redemptrix or Medatrix of all graces in any sense. ❌These titles are intrinsically erroneous in themselves. ❌Calling her these things is heretical. ❌Marian cooperation in salvation is negligible. What Mater Populi…

Mater Populi Fidelis 19. In the Feria IV meeting on 21 February 1996, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was the Prefect of the then Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, was asked whether the request from the movement Vox Populi Mariae Mediatrici to define a dogma declaring…

The headline "Vatican nixes use of ‘Co-Redemptrix,’ ‘Mediatrix’ as titles for Mary" is too strong. While the terms may not be appropriate for liturgical use, the document doesn’t reject the classical understanding of either of them. The caution against Mediatrix of all graces,…

Worth reading the actual document. The Church isn’t rejecting Marian doctrine. It’s clarifying language. The older titles were often misunderstood in modern usage. Same theology, clearer expression.
