So grateful for a terrific artwork that captures @OrnitShani and my argument. Out this month @penguinrandom.
Illustrated by Siddhesh Gautam (@siddheshgautam) & designed by me (Shadab Khan), the jacket of “Assembling India’s Constitution” (@itihaasnaama and @OrnitShani) layers history with design. Pantone blue grounds it with calm authority; bold serif type adds permanence.

Here is a short think piece that offers a frame for asking: how might advocacy campaigns take stock of when they are getting traction? ... The kind of traction that can last and change the way governments make decisions.... (in four languages)...

My new article with @trounstine shows hundreds of city governments had organized employees by the 1930s-1950s. Despite different legal contexts before 1960, the timing & location of early public-sector organization had more in common with private-sector organization than is often…

In @apsrjournal, @adam_m_auerbach, @shikhar_46, and @tariqthachil surveyed small town politicians in India and found that local government officials lack procedural knowledge on how to govern. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Since I've often posted about this project on Twitter, I wanted to share that my job market paper is now forthcoming at the Journal of Politics! This paper has been a labor of love and the source of much joy (and frustration). Excited that it found a home!

New article out w/ @tanu_kumar1 on patchwork formalization, private land developers, and public service provision at the edges of India's cities. ⬇️ @JDevStudies
New paper with @adam_m_auerbach in JDS. Exploration of how cities expand outwards--it's often a citizen-led phenomenon, where people just buy up agricultural land and build on it. Can create problems for getting access to services, but citizens are also creative problem-solvers!
