One question I see repeated: "will the Tonga eruption cool or warm the planet?" Volcanic eruptions introduce particulates into the atmosphere, & enough can have an insulating, cooling effect for a few weeks, months, or sometimes years. Volcanoes are <1% of CO2 yearly emissions.
Another question: "will the Tonga eruption trigger other volcanoes to erupt?" Answer: No, as volcanoes have their own distinct, separate magma chambers. They are not connected in ways that cause chain reactions. Right now, between 40-50 volcanoes are erupting. That's normal.
We have issued a NATIONAL ADVISORY: TSUNAMI ACTIVITY following the Tongan eruption. We expect New Zealand coastal areas on the north and east coast of the North Island and the Chatham Islands to experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore.
