After yet another conference was called with a misbehaving student & his parents & school staff, NYC educator Eric Shieh asked the principal when they would stop with the meetings already and just give him a detention. His principal replied, "When we decide to give up on him."

I'm constantly struck by how common it is to judge colleges (and private K-12 schools) not by the quality of the education they offer but by the number of applicants they manage to avoid admitting. Say it with me: "Selectivity and quality are completely different things"

Feeling so grateful to have participated in a virtual session with a bunch of amazing young people, @MisterMinor, @MsKass1, and all the folks at #compassionsummit discussing activism and service. I'm looking forward to the world these students create.

Thank you!!! Youth will save us all! #compassionsummit Here's a gorgeous question set for youth to construct their role in reimagining the future: We give this to youth after asking them to: "Describe the kind of world you want to live in."

Don't write off students who struggle and label them as lazy or unmotivated. Instead, be curious about the skills they're missing that we can teach them to help them succeed. Let's assume the best about kids. Most often they want to succeed but may not have the tools...yet.

Longitudinal study finds that, far from motivating kids to try harder, a bad grade is likely to lead them to act out: goo.gl/nt8o3e. (Other research shows that leading kids to focus on grades undermines interest in learning regardless of what grade they ultimately get.)

You're not grading assignments. You're collecting evidence to determine student progress and pointing them towards their next steps. Make the mental switch. It matters.
