TIL that in the original German, "doppelganger" is the same in both singular and plural. Isn't that delicious? Not the same in the feminine form, but we can't have everything. #LanguageLovers

It's this kind of shit that made me associate God with anxiety

The most profound paragraph in all of C. S. Lewis, at least to me

Well, I've done it. I've done the thing you're sposed to do. I've forced myself to write even when I don't feel like it and now I hate the work and I hate myself and it's all terrible and maybe just maybe there might be something salvageable in it when I get back to it tomorrow.

When the doctor says, "how are you" as you're sitting down, I never know if I'm supposed to follow social niceties or get right into my back pain or sinus infection or whatever. Any doctors seeing this, what do you think?

My therapist always starts our session with “How are you?” and I always say “I’m good!” and then spend the next hour talking about how I am decidedly Not Good.

People who become quite good writers tend to be those who have spent a lot of time being quite bad writers and did not, as a result, run away from themselves. Never underestimate the power of having a strong stomach for your own shortcomings.

The first time I ever properly read shakespeare, I was twelve studying Romeo and Juliet at school and delighted with how fucking funny it is. Viscerally felt the principle that I now intellectually understand as, when you make them laugh the subsequent making them cry hits better

We talk a lot about classic books we hated; I want to hear about the ones you LOVED. Tell me about an experience where you picked up a classic and it melted your face with pleasure. Tell me about the funniest, strangest, scariest, saddest great books you ever read.

Restaurant take: if a certain amount of time elapses after asking for the bill, you should walk without paying. (Have never actually done this. But waiting for forty - five minutes is not cool.)

Today's favourite piece of #Aussie slang: "cactus". Means broken, dead or exhausted. Saw one etymology that suggested it's from an invasive species of cactus plant that was eradicated, but who knows how reliable these things are.

Feminist and lesbian icon Sandi Toksvig is once again undergoing harassment from "Gender Criticals". Toksvig outlined the absurdity of the trans bathroom panic and criticised self-proclaimed "feminists" for prioritising their hatred for trans ppl over real women's rights issues.

What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? ~ Langston Hughes

Just did a Bridgerton rewatch. How on earth are they going to follow that. Penelope is easily the most interesting character - but those brilliant writers I'm sure will spin more gold

Ugh I finally filed my FBAR and the relief is palpable #USExpat

A non-actor friend said to me: “The acting industry seems to be a massive con. It’s mostly people who can’t be actors anymore doing endless training for other actors for jobs that aren’t there”. Does feel like that sometimes… @the98percentpod

Anyone else feel like chartreuse is too pretty a word to be used on such an ugly colour?
