UK among the few countries still practising immobilisation for up to 6 weeks post acute traumatic SCI. Not much robust data to back this practice. #SystematicReview by Natalie Gray, senior physiotherapist @nottmhospitals , highlights the knowledge gaps #BSPRMBASCIS2023

Here we go then! Prof @AnandDPandyan from @hss_bu has just delivered the inaugural lecture at the #BSPRMBASCIS2023 , stimulating discussions on what we know, and don't, about spasticity, and weakness/pain/functions.
Great study, and one has to wonder whether the finding — that privatisation may reduce costs, but it can also worsen standards — generalises to other aspects of health service provision (and indeed other public services). HT @StefanFSchubert

Great to see this 12,500 people randomised in this pilot study of high vs. standard dose influenza vaccine. Simplicity, scale, randomisation, with data collection through routine registries in Denmark. Demonstrates insertion of randomisation in everyday care to inform policy.
This pragmatic, randomized trial of high-dose vs. standard-dose quadrivalent influenza vaccines relied solely on Danish health registries for data collection. Feasibility testing here sets the stage for a fully powered #RCT. eviden.cc/3W2oMzp #IDTwitter #MedTwitter
My 7 year old was adamant that kids have a 2nd stomach for dessert and as an ophthalmologist, I suspected she was wrong but couldn’t be sure, so we consulted Netter’s atlas of human anatomy and sure enough, my 7 year old is full of shit.
And here’s what I mean about the value of pragmatism: E.g. about half have diabetes and about half are in rural settings (the low proportion of women is explained by the context - US Veterans) No study visits Simple procedures Relevant results #AHA22
NEJM paper now out FIRST EVER RCT of colonoscopy With 10 year follow up, 42% adherence, no gain in colon cancer death nor all cause death I break down the trial, history & interpretation in 30 mins youtube video worth your time Here is an excerpt youtu.be/SMRS4-ng8T0
It happened! A reviewer suggested that I familiarise myself with the work of Pownall et al (2019, 2020) to understand the field better 🤪
I saw a job post the other day. 👔 It required 4+ years of experience in FastAPI. 🤦 I couldn't apply as I only have 1.5+ years of experience since I created that thing. 😅 Maybe it's time to re-evaluate that "years of experience = skill level". ♻

Anecdotes aside, I'm quite confident that screening healthy people with whole body MRI is a bad idea for almost everyone except the people who own the testing center. I say this as someone who has studied medical imaging and risk assessment for a looooong time.
I think a lot about asymmetric risk, and that extends to my health. There are certain conditions like aneurysms that have no symptoms but then kill you suddenly. So, as a healthy 43 year old, I went in for a full body MRI. What I learned amazed me…
Great post on one of the most astonishing examples of confirmation bias that I've seen in the wild. Everyone runs the risk of this, and I'm sure all of us have succumbed on several occasions, but this one was just spectacularly glaring.
The desire to smash “retweet” 🔁 when you see something that confirms your preconceptions is almost irresistible - even if you haven’t actually read it How did some of the biggest SoMe platforms in science make a mistake so huge? alasdairmunro.substack.com/p/how-junk-sci…
Interesting thread on how we communicate the results when trials fail to reject the null hypothesis (i.e are neutral or negative) Applies to many areas of medicine and not just Parkinson's disease
I learned in medical school that clinical trials are the best test of a hypothesis. In this week’s issue of @NEJM, two anti-synuclein trials tested the hypothesis that α-synuclein is toxic and both were negative. What keeps us from falsifying the hypothesis? (1/8)
Epic editorial just published in @jrheum re:@ACRheum 2019 osteoarthritis recommendations In short, ACR took the (correct!) stance that we should recommend AGAINST hyaluronic acid This somewhat understandably upset companies that produce this voodoo. So they wrote an editorial!
