The claim about slow pace is fake news Commons Committee spent 12 hours on Clause 1 of the Bill. So far Lords has spent about 11 hours and normal rule is that Lords takes 150% of time of Commons So one would expect clause 1 to take at least 18 hours in Lords
I welcome scrutiny from the House of Lords & respect the impt job they have to do, but we must work together to ensure the Terminally Ill Adults Bill passes through Parliament in a timely fashion to giving dying people choice & dignity in their final days. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
Sneaky use of language, yet again. How is discussion & scrutiny in parliament 'sabotage of democracy"? Private Members Bill are scrutinised, amended & rejected in Lords. Lord McCrea just challenged the idea that Lords shld just cede to MPs' judgement. Bns Hayter complained [...]
“Don’t try and sabotage democracy.” Dame Esther Rantzen notes that a flood of 1000+ amendments goes beyond scrutiny. It risks subverting the elected chamber and weakening trust in parliamentary process. The Commons has twice endorsed this Bill - Peers should respect that…
👏WELL SAID NIGEL DODDS! Some much-needed common sense from Lord @NigelDoddsDUP who points out that if the assisted suicide Bill had received better scrutiny by MPs, it wouldn’t require as much work now & how the Bill deals with “critical issues” that demand careful scrutiny.
Where was the “working together” when the Bill was passing through the @HouseofCommons ? Where were the institutions we generally use in Britain to achieve consensus? The Royal Commission? The White Paper? The draft Bill for consultation? The pre-legislative scrutiny?

Careful scrutiny is not “procedural delay”. The Bill is a shipwreck. It should have been a govt Bill, with a White Paper, proper consultation and pre-legislative scrutiny. It’s mad trying to do it as a Private Member’s Bill.
Peers are getting increasingly frustrated about the potential of the Bill getting wrecked through procedural delays.
I honestly think there should be a national public inquiry into the Covid inquiry. Utter farce from day one.
This is extraordinary from the Covid inquiry. No modelling “established” that 23,000 lives would be saved if lockdown had happened a week earlier - that was a notorious and debunked Ferguson claim…

The few remaining hereditary peers are soon to be forced out of the House of Lords Another act of constitutional vandalism by Labour Baroness Hooper once told me that when she was a Gov't Whip, she would think nothing about applying a three-line whip to the life peers But she…

I worked in Whitehall for 15yrs and saw many Bills where details were pored over and debated. This has not happened for the Assisted Dying Bill - the sponsors have avoided scrutiny. As a result, it is an absolute shambles, a disaster waiting to happen.
1. How do we know the AS bill came to the Lords in a totally inadequate state? As Lord Biggar points out in the Times, there’s a simple answer: “Hansard records that some MPs only waved it through on the assumption that the Lords would somehow rectify its myriad deficiencies.”
I rather lost my cool on state over-reach in the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. The law attempts to tighten up regulations on anyone smoking in theatre plays and threatens TWO YEARS in prison for designers of any adverts for vapes that youth might see. The Lib Dems want to force…
Even though I say so myself, this post has aged extremely well. If anything, it’s got worse for Labour since May. But as I said six months ago, if Labour can only win four out of 98 seats in Co Durham, it has a major problem on its hands. It still does. open.substack.com/pub/aallison/p…
"I had to add" - no, you didn't. You said it because you want to push your own personal views onto students to flatter your own ego.
Today I taught students about Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech. I had to add: ‘In 2025 our Home Secretary echoed his views. 2 key differences: Powell was a) a Tory and b) instantly dismissed from his role in the Shadow Cabinet.’ I can’t believe this is where we are.
The IRA's campaign of violent terror waged against the people of the United Kingdom and targeted at members of the British Armed Forces who served with courage and distinction, was one of the darkest chapters in British history. I believe the Northern Ireland veterans, who I was…
When I joined the Army all my instructors were Northern Ireland veterans. I owe these men & the generation that went before me much, for shaping the soldier and man I became. It was important therefore to show solidarity with them today against the government's Northern Ireland…
The face of evil. Trump is more than happy to embarrass other world leaders, but bin Salman appears to be an exception. He ought to have realised that a journalist was going ask about Jamal Khashoggi’s murder at bin Salman’s behest. news.sky.com/story/trump-ep…
