there is a great video of itzhak perlman completely destroying a bluegrass tune...he literally can't stay on the beat. there are internal rhythmic aesthetics to different genres that are almost impossible to hear if your training told you never to listen for anything like that
teaching those with classical training is very strange for me, they're much "better" at the instrument, but have more more trouble doing things outside of one rigid way...which tracks with how schooling impacts p much any skills.
most of these guys only use two or three fingers on the bow! so i do really focus on the technique, but only on the most basic mechanics, and i often teach them more AFTER a while of playing not the other way around.
there is not one single piece of accepted "violin" technique that some high level fiddler doesn't break, though most of them find a way to let the bow travel loosely, and let their fingers line up on the strings, though i could also find exceptions to those!
ok so i want to push back on this, i'm actually a technique skeptic, especially as far as bowed instruments is concerned: e.g. this man is one of the greatest fiddlers in american history
