Last thing I'll say is that to NH's credit, it actually had great moments between the main cast in the early game. Before NH these guys never really interacted with one another on-screen until now. Makes it all the more frustrating how they basically drop this after K.K. arrives.
This creates a vicious cycle where people don't care about the special NPCs as much anymore because they don't want to pay to learn more about them, which gives Nintendo less incentive to give them more depth, so now it's just always scanning amiibo to talk to them in a room.

TL;DR: I don't like AC's current direction, I don't want to design a bunch of goddamn rooms again, I want way more emphasis on interacting with the world and villagers next time, and I want the NPCs to actually exist beyond just their shop/facility roles again. Okay bye now.
Villagers always moving in and out also help kept the world feeling alive. "The live game happening every minute of every day, whether you're playing or not" was GCN's tagline. Now you are more or less encouraged to keep your island frozen in time with the same villagers forever.
"Ugly" villagers also hold a really good point in the games where you couldn't choose who stays in your town, in the old games you can't handpick who stays around, that would lead to you warming to ugly villagers. Suddenly the villager you thought were "ugly" weren't really ugly
