Excellent letter. After all they have been through at the hands of past British governments, this government’s treatment of the Chagossians is shameful. That their homeland is being handed over to a hostile island 1,000 miles away in the name of de-colonisation is grotesque.

SIR– 50 years ago, Labour PMs Harold Wilson & James Callaghan wanted to redistribute wealth by steep taxation with 83% top rate rising to 98% for investments. Result was inflation 25%, productivity plummeted, wealth creators left the country & standard of living fell. #Telegraph
