Being picky about tech stacks and overspecialization was a ZIRP thing. If you’re a Software Engineer, I expect you to pick up new technologies/stacks in a few weeks. Frontend, Backend, Infra (w/ cloud services). Ofc it’s not the same as being an expert in all of them, but should…

Q from a dev: "I'm a native Android engineer. My manager is pushing me to be more 'generalist' and do e.g. backend or frontend work as well. I am hesitant because being a specialist used to pay better." My take: "fullstack" engineers will become more in-demand, esp with AI tools

The cost of building is minimal now. Instead of planning and aligning people, building a first version seems to be the right approach for many people. Design docs and PRDs can come later retrospectively. x.com/mbleigh/status…

When I joined Google I came to appreciate its design doc culture -- a way to ferret out issues and align without throwaway work. I'm not sure it works in the AI era. You *have* to prototype things, you can't know what will work just by thinking about it anymore.

This is a solid demonstration of Railgun's privacy pools mechanism ( papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf… ) working in practice, allowing Railgun to avoid serving proceeds of crime without using any snooping / backdoors. How it works: * Anyone can deposit into Railgun. * After you deposit,…

Eventually, @zkLend has suffered a $9.5M exploit on the Starknet network. Stolen funds were bridged to Ethereum and laundered via Railgun, but due to protocol policies, the funds were returned to the original address by Railgun!

If you want to get good building systems and databases you should go work for a bigger company or a startup with serious infra demands. It's hard to develop excellence thinking about scale, correctness and architecture in an environment where these aren't critical to the business

Erotic (or compulsive attraction) is another response to superior intelligence! There can be a blurry line between fear arousal & sexual arousal if a person believes they can join forces with the superior entity & benefit from them in some way.

A 2021 study showed that exposure to superior intelligence activates our threat detection system in the brain. The amygdala lights up when we encounter someone visibly smarter than us and it’s the same response we have to physical threats. It upsets us.

How to be a Principal Engineer/Senior Principal Engineer/Senior Architect/fancy-sounding-title Engineer, a thread: 1. You're evaluated on how much more the company succeeds because you're there, not the lines of code you wrote. If you can unblock someone, do that. If you need to…

Very interesting. Do you have more insights into senior principal engineer role for somebody who considers it as a next milestone on their carrier path?

Product flywheels are so much easier to create if you have decent infrastructure that allows you to recompose and create product experiences quickly. It's a lesson hard to learn if you never had a chance to work for a company with the right building blocks.

Good software engineering is about encapsulating complexity while avoiding hiding away failure modes.

Nietzsche on marriage. Crazy how true this is. Most relationships can even be summed up with this.

I’ve gotten thousands of DMs over the years from people telling me about their problems. Here’s one interesting pattern/cluster I’ve noticed, which I’d loosely describe as “anxious self-flagellating ambitious guy who desires greatness but refuses to learn from his mistakes”
