People really seemed to enjoy this, so I've decided to start a series of posts every Friday with #oceanasgaeilge, where I share fun ocean sayings/translations in Irish! Please RT if interested, as I would love to see more Irish language representation in the online sci community!

In Irish we have a great elasmo-saying for people who are very laid back: "Chomh sámh le liamhán gréine" means "As chilled out as a basking shark". 😎 I think I'll have to start using that one in English too. 🦈 🇮🇪 #shark #baskingshark #gaeilge #elasmobranch

A couple of weeks ago I presented my work on a sensitivity analysis of fish spcies in the Northeast Atlantic @EMBSsymposium in Bodø Norway. Thanks for the opportunity! 🐟🌊

Check out the new Purse Search Ireland logo! I love it! 💙

🚨 We're so excited to announce that our citizen science project, Purse Search Ireland, has a new logo! 🚨 We're going to miss our old ray friend, but we're very excited about the fresh new look! Thanks to our co-director @TylerDanMedina for the new design!

Looking forward to presenting at this! 🌊

In this week's Joint Webinar, our own Bríd O’Connor (@MarineInst) presents a sensitivity analysis of Northeast Atlantic fish species, highlighting vulnerable species and gaps in protection. Looking forward to discussing her findings with @CIBBRiNA & @ReduceProject! 🇪🇺🦈 #Bycatch

I'm honoured to be featured on @EmpowerUs_EU series #WomenMakingWaves with Máire Éinniú & the legend Gráinne Ní Mháille! Irish women have always played an important role in marine communities and sciences & I'm so grateful for my little part in that 💙 #InternationalWomensDay

🌊Women Making Waves - Ireland🌊 The #WomenMakingWaves series celebrates women across Europe who have been empowered by the ocean or have empowered it in return. This week we’re sharing stories of female ocean trailblazers in Ireland. Read here: empowerus-project.eu/news-and-event…

A model I've been running since Dec 17th crashed last night 🙃 I never should have stopped hula hooping, running away with the circus would have been a solid move right now

The Irish for the goblin shark (the obvious winner here!) is "siorc bocánach". 🧌🦈 #OceanAsGaeilge🌊🇮🇪 If you don't, check out @MISS_Elasmo Shark Madness! Every day in March they share info about sharks that face off in daily head to heads to find the best shark! 🦈

Blacktip reef shark and the goblin shark….stop making this so tough to choose. 😭 Both these sharks have their own special traits, but only one can move on! Vote via the poll reply! #sharkscience 🦈

It's Ireland's Women in Sport Week!💚 @sportireland I always thought of myself as unsporty, but I've realised that isn't a thing. Sport is for everyone, you just need to find the right people to play with. Happy #WIS week to my fellow tag rugby-playing women from @MarineInst! 🏉

That's a wrap on this leg of the Irish Anglerfish & Megrim survey @MarineInst 🎣 The ocean wasn't particularly kind to us, but it's always great to step away from the laptop and get back to the ocean for a bit 🌊

I did the summer bursary programme back in 2012 (😳) and I absolutely loved it! If you know any 3rd level students looking for some marine science experience, this was invaluable for me 🌊

Applications are now open for the 2025 Bursary Programme! Hear from Anna, one of our 2024 bursars about her experience. There are a number of bursaries available in Oranmore, Co Galway and Newport, Co Mayo. 👉For more info & to apply visit bit.ly/Bursary2025

For meaningful & effective conservation, an elasmobranch conservation strategy should not only lay out the plans to monitor/research populations, but actionable preservation, mitigation & restoration measures must be made possible 🦈🌱 fairseas.ie/2025/02/18/con… #FairSeas #Sharks

Word of the day is 'spuddle' (19th century): to be extremely busy whilst achieving absolutely nothing.

I know what I'll be doing this weekend! 🦈🥚 #egghunt #mermaidspurse #shark #ray #conservation #citizenscience

The sun has *finally* come out here in Galway & I hope it's as dry and bright wherever you are too! It's a lovely day for a little beachcomb, so if anyone stumbles across any mermaids' purses this weekend be sure to submit them to our online sighting form! marinedimensions.ie/reporting-merm…

Not jumping the ship here quite yet, but I've finally joined @bluesky If any of my community here are on there, I'd love to stay connected 💙 bsky.app/profile/b-r-i-…
