My copy of Techno-orientalism 2.0, which includes my essay on the animated adaptations of the novels of Project Itoh, arrived today.
People were saying Hosada was the next Miyazaki. They said this about Shinkai also. Americans know one guy
Weirdly, if I recall correctly, the local Philippine dub of Macross borrows some elements from the US Robotech version, renaming Hikaru into "Ricky Hunter" while Minmay is renamed as "Maria." I wonder if any copies of this dub were ever preserved/archived anywhere?
Philippines we got Macross first before Robotech. Many know of Macross success they didn’t have to deal with the laws of North America.
An interesting thing is that while parking in HK has mostly standardized around Octopus payments, EV charging has not, and it's currently a free-for-all of various proprietary mobile apps without really a clear dominant player.
While Malaysians are foaming over the app-ification of our emergency services, take a gander on Hong Kong’s parking meters, featuring payments by Octopus stored-value card, bank cards and QR payments, allowing you to pay for parking without touching a phone or an app:
The Ostrich Waco saga is really a very clear reflection of how incoherent “politics” have become in Canada. Post lockdown, pilled Facebook people finding themselves alone in a world they don’t understand, still riled up and funded by American money, needing to “do something”

we are being asked to come up with "creative uses of AI" at my school and it's like...you mean creative ways for students to cheat? literally its only use
I inherited one of these 1998 model laserjets from my advisor when I finished my PhD in 2010. It was a pre-usb era device so I had to find an adapter for its proprietary cable. It was still working when I gave it to a PhD student at UMN before I moved to HK in 2023.
This is unironically the solution to every "printers suck" conversation I've been using the same Brother B&W laser printer since 2009
Instead of starting EU5 like the cool kids around here, I have embraced my inner old otaku and started re-playing Gihren's Greed instead.
Yeah the actual adoption of chatbots never actually took off. It's overwhelmingly just a "write my paper for me" machine. It's why the inevitable collapse won't leave even a token one of them behind, it's utility is so marginal.

>email like 5 different members of faculty, postdocs, and PhD students about their programs >every single one says “DO NOT COME HERE” is this a good sign for the profession
genuinely baffled why im getting emails about a workshop to help you deal with the inaccurate results ai produces when using it for academic research. why wouldn't you just. not use it
My mutuals recently discussed a video that connects incels and hikkikomori, and I want to note that such connections are somewhat tenuous, primarily because the two groups address different aspects of social malaise.

For some reason I cannot discern, the cats always get very interested in what I'm up to every time I attach my glucose monitors.
Too early in the morning to be wandering around Nathan Road.
Sometimes I wonder whether I unconsciously agree to take on more academic service work precisely so I have an excuse to put off my own writing.
Alex Baldwin's weird pronunciation makes it sound like he's saying he's a packet a mie goreng here.
The trailer for the exhibition series COUNTING FRAMES: DAVID BORDWELL ON HONG KONG CINEMA.
If you’re in Hong Kong in December or January, know that the HK Film Critics Society is holding screenings in tribute to late film historian David Bordwell. A great opportunity to see films like INFERNAL AFFAIRS and SHAOLIN SOCCER in 35mm or A HERO NEVER DIES on the big screen.
