Frederick and Firestone experimentally demonstrated in 1946 that longitudinal sound waves can exhibit all of the polarization properties of light. Nail in the coffin for the Hertz theory.
This model explains why radiation is closely associated with electrical transients: the elasticity only generate waves when you yank on the aether via these fluid tensions.
The most important properties of the aether are that it can have vorticity (magnetism/electrostatic), which can be modeled by an incompressible zero-viscosity fluid, and that it can transmit Poisson waves (radiation), which can be modeled by a nearly-incompressible elastic solid.
