The children enjoyed both talks, and asked a lot of questions, which is always a good sign!
This afternoon Ken Worpole spoke to Years 5&6 about the strange and fascinating history of Hackney’s ‘Island’ community.
Hackney’s youngest elected councillor Humaira Garasia spoke to Benthal students in assembly this morning as part of this week’s 70th birthday celebrations.
We are kicking off the week’s anniversary celebrations by having the social historian Ken Worpole come in to talk to pupils and parents about the history of Hackney’s ‘Island’ community.

The school was designed in six weeks, right up against a budget deadline. There was no time for a proper consultation so Mass simply asked his children and their friends what they liked and disliked about their own schools.
A fellow architect described Maas’s work as a ‘Mickey Mouse design’, to which the architect’s responses ‘frankly, considering who we were both designing for, I accepted his comment as a compliment.’
‘there were few parks of places to play in the area.’ Hence the school’s many little garden like areas, and huge split-level playground.
