From Here to Humility Guest post by @bitesizetherapy on the foundational importance of humility in psychotherapy At every stage, a clinician must be willing to acknowledge that they do not have all the answers psychiatrymargins.com/p/from-here-to…

I was super excited to get a “Firefighters 2026 Calendar” but it turned out to be an IFS thing.

Accessible writing opens the door. It extends the reach of psychoanalytic theory to non-analytic clinicians. From there, people can seek out what fits with their interests and taste. Now kick back and relax with a copy of Bion’s “The Grid and Caesura”

If psychoanalytic communication is not useful to a reasonable number of practitioners, it becomes not only exclusive but also exclusionary by definition.

The placement of linguistic barriers in front of psychoanalytic ideas is akin to placing a velvet rope outside of a condemned building. Modern day clinicians long for a more in-depth understanding of the clinical landscape. Don’t give them a maze when they are eager for a map.

Excerpt from keynote I’m here to cut through jargon. Not to dumb things down, but to make essential ideas accessible to clinicians at every career stage We’re awash in pop psychology, Instagram “influencers” and AI slop The MH professions deserve better (more on my IG soon👇)

AI is designed to detect and continue patterns. Psychotherapy is designed to detect and change patterns.

No matter the treatment duration (short, medium, long-term), we are always cooking from scratch. There are many forces trying to turn psychotherapy into a drive-thru.

My inbox is flooded with e-mails announcing papers, talks, meetings, and some of the titles, and occasionally abstracts, are simply incomprehensible...I truly believe that many of these jargon-filled terms can be described in ordinary English. - Morris Eagle

A basic axiom of psychodynamic psychotherapy is that it is noncoercive - no one can make anyone else do anything. - Glen Gabbard

A child’s instinct to bond with his or her parents drives them to do so regardless of the terms and conditions. - Louis Cozolino

A core question addressed by any psychoanalytic or psychodynamic theory is why people repeat a particular relationship pattern even when it brings them disappointment and suffering, and even when their conscious goal is to change that pattern. - Morris Eagle

We tend to form and transform relationships so that they conform to our early acquired expectations and schemas…[We behave] in particular ways that will elicit just those responses from the other that will tend to perpetuate early relationship patterns. - Morris Eagle

There will always be therapists trying to create revolutionary new therapies with great acronyms, but I think that the tried and true methods will remain strong and stay strong because they’re tapping into fundamental constructs in human experience. - Louis Cozolino

Psychoanalysis has an air of impenetrability and we can open the windows. Psychoanalytic theory can be taught in practical, accessible ways - it is workhorse and can be put to use. There is no need to treat a steel toe boot like a glass slipper.
