We keep overinvesting in "peak demand". The electric system is the only commodity system in the world where extra demand means more generation, upgraded transmission, upgraded distribution. Everyone else optimizes assets and adds lots of storage. Only answer is batteries/demand…
In ordinary, competitive businesses, the solution to the problem of high prices is high prices. The market equilibrates. In regulated part of the sector, not so much! A unidirectional price escalation for electric transmission rates for each PJM utility in the last 10 years:
To reduce the administrative burden on all parties, regulators and utilities must explicitly distinguish between an EV that is merely “capable” of bi-directional charging and one that is enabled, writes Bill Crider of Ford Motor Co. utilitydive.com/news/how-we-ta…
People react so strongly to energy companies during short-term price spikes that there's little appreciation for how much the industry has reduced real energy costs over the long run. 3 graphs to this point: Energy Expenditures as % of GDP 1/3

I've been on this platform a long time. 17 yrs. Almost exclusively talking energy. If I had told you then that we were going to be time-shifting GWs of power, in Texas of all places, w/Li-Ion batteries, I would have been laughed at. But it's happening every day.
“These grid-forming inverters that we’re installing in Scotland—nobody is doing that,” says Julian Leslie, chief engineer and strategic energy planning director for the National Energy System Operator (NESO). From @pfairley for @IEEESpectrum spectrum.ieee.org/grid-scale-bat…
But of course the value to the end customer is higher for distributed and offers different value such as backup or ability to install larger solar systems with higher DC/AC ratios so it’s never quite as simple as ‘it’s cheaper’

The purpose of cities is to put people in close proximity to commerce, public institutions, and social network. Dense, mixed-use urbanism fosters cormmunity, industry and innovation, responsive government, etc. So we don’t want automated cars to prolong the suburban moment.
