Solid advertisement for building science here! Good time to bring up the James Brown blower door video courtesy of @EnergyVanguard youtu.be/Xsp3yCxoYOA

On top of that, the "blower door" test is cool as hell.

Another round of tests published, this time on a WINIX 5500-2 unit. PlasmaWave(R) technology appears to generate large amounts of negative ions, as measured, but doesn't impact CADR much: built-envi.com/wp-content/upl…

Thanks to @parhamazimi_87 for kicking off this big field project as a postdoc and to Insung Kang for finishing it up!

Finally, our first paper from a series of to-be-published papers related to the impacts of mechanical ventilation on the IAQ in residences is out and available in @STOTEN_journal sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

We tested a version of a Corsi-Rosenthal box with MERV 13 filters: built-envi.com/wp-content/upl… CADR intuitively increased with particle size: 166 CFM for 0.09-1 µm 321 CFM for 0.5-3 µm 464 CFM for 5-11 µm More air cleaner testing here: built-envi.com/portfolio/air-… @JimRosenthal4 @CorsIAQ

We are thrilled as well!!! Looking forward to working with you!

I am thrilled to share that I am joining the IIT College of Architecture in Chicago as an Assistant Professor this coming academic year! @IITArchitecture @illinoistech

Wondering what that "99% reduction in 1 h" air cleaner is actually doing in your space? We made the air cleaner efficacy investigation tool (ACE IT) to help evaluate often opaque performance data. tinyurl.com/air-cleaner-ef… w/ @built_envi @mheidarinejad @ChemDelphine @marwa_zaatari

Read our new paper testing a popular ionizer product here. In collaboration w/ great partners @ChemDelphine @etgall @mheidarinejad and our teams. TLDR: not much particle removal, removal of some VOCs (but generation of others), and no NOx/O3 emissions. Hope the data are useful...

People are concerned about Bipolar Ionization devices producing ozone. You should be MORE worried by this new @built_envi study that found a unit not removing a statistically significant amount of particles! Isn't that a purpose of an "air cleaner"? sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Surprisingly little experimental data out there on such a straightforward question: how much ventilation do you provide by opening windows in schools? @IAQnerd made CO2 tracer test measurements in a local school (in winter, Chicago)

Promote school windows to be open, if just a crack! This class with all 6 windows closed 1.2 ACH, all windows open one inch 4.0 ACH, all windows open two inches 4.3 ACH!

Finally got around to updating our August blog post on masks a few hours before this update from CDC 🙃 built-envi.com/what-kind-of-m…. Need to update again (and again)

Updated today: CDC recognizes that cloth masks act as both source control and personal protection. They protect others AND protect the wearer. cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

Great story w/ some great insights and quotes by @ShellyMBoulder, @IAQinGWN, @WBahnfleth, @stephensbrent. My sense is that the general public is definitely cluing in to the importance of the air they breathe indoors. Leveraging now & post-pandemic is important.

The questions I always ask about BPI are: 1. If they emit ions that destroy pathogens in the air, how do they not attack human lung tissue? and 2. What assurances are there that chemical reactions do not create byproducts and/or particles? Never received a good answer to either.

Thanks for your work on this! I would also add that air cleaners purported to kill coronavirus really need critical assessment of manufacturer claims. Standards are week/nonexistent. Test reports plagued with weak science. Potential for chemical/particle byproducts is high.
