ICU Hemodynamic Secrets – The role of ScvO2: There is not such a thing as a “normal” cardiac output (CO). A CO of 3.5 l/min may be adequate for a 90 years’ old, 100 pounds sedated patient but inadequate for a 40 years’ old, 250 pounds patient with septic ARDS. Ideally,

ICU Life: Hoorah! Another stretch of night shifts is over. I know that (for various reasons) many friends love working nights but, in case you had no time to review the literature on the topic, I will summarize it for you: We are dying one night shift at a time... Cheers!

ICU Mechanical Ventilation (MV): There are many books & articles on the topic but this 8 years' old review has nice graphs/tables & a good discussion of the specific ventilatory approaches in ARDS and COPD:

ICU Mini-Stories: Middle-age pt presented to ED at 8:00 am with cough/dyspnea/weakness x 2 weeks. Poor appetite/could walk only a few feet due to dyspnea/dizziness. Vitals: HBP 79/60, HR 80, afebrile, O2 sat 96% on 2 l/m. Physical exam: ill-appearing, dry mucous membranes. Labs:
Great refresher. Thanks!
👉🏻 This a thread about Hypocalcemia in critical care. 🧐 Why hypocalcemia is important in critical care and when do we need to take care of it?
Cosign. One of my first questions to families - patients - HemOnc. Is the treatment curative or palliative in intent? We, the physicians, usually do a terrible job explaining the difference.
The ICU is not where patients should discover that their cancer-directed therapy is palliative in intent.
Nursing care in the ICU and the HDU is led by a group of highly experienced and senior nursing staff who are integral to the provision of high quality care.
ICU/ED ECG Secrets: New fear unlocked: 40 yo male, previously healthy, referred to the ED post-CPR after documented ventricular fibrillation (VF). Vitals & physical exam: OK. No family history of sudden death. No drugs. Any concern from this 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG)?
there’s no such thing as “just a nurse”
I am just a nurse, but I ask my nursing students if they have Twitter, and if they do, I give them Dr. Ghali's account info because he is such a great teacher.
