I had a resident who came to me distressed this weekend because she had to get a walker and start keeping a wheelchair on hand. I tried to reassure her but she was too upset. Using mobility aids shouldn't be a source of shame. It's hurting for the people who need them.
Just heard on the radio 'I don't think we'll ever see the Queen in a wheelchair' she wouldn't give in. Can we all (including the media) stop this idea that using a wheelchair is giving in or so awful that we couldn't possibly see a 95 year old use one if she needed.
I have heard this take about basically every disability and chronic illness. Some (many) people cannot cope with the fact that disability can easily happen to anyone at any time without any way to control or prevent it. Bug bite, freak accident, random illness.
