A terrific discussion for the 1700th anniversary of Nicaea. Jack and Gabriel touch on some fascinating similarities and differences between Christian and Islamic monotheism. Please, another episode!

Ubi sunt? (Baruch 3:16) Quite a nice thread on Devin's recent article -- though he himself doesn't say it, the Qur'an's use of this homiletic topos makes a great argument (among many) for its inclusion in the western canon.

🧵 The Quran frequently presents ruins rhetorically, showing the cyclical nature of history. Past nations rise, thrive, collapse, and leave traces. Columns, rock dwellings, overturned cities, and preserved ships are not passive, they argue. (1/10)

I confess I had no idea this mosque existed. Do the remains actually go back to the Umayyad period?

The Umayyad Mosque in Harran, Türkiye, was built by Marwan II, the last Umayyad caliph, when he made Harran the Umayyad capital. It matched Damascus’s mosque in size and extravagance (see ALT) but was destroyed 800 years ago during the Mongol invasion.

A fantastic tour de force. This word isn’t attested in the epigraphy of North Arabia (yet), but let’s see what future finds reveal …

Mabrook, Josef!

And with that, the DPhil journey is complete! So many people to thank, especially the brilliant Michael Macdonald and @ccsahner for all their support and advice along the way.

The journal "Religion and Society" has just published a nice collection of short essays about Peter Brown (including one by Peter himself). Mine is a personal reflection about Peter's time in Princeton. You can read them here (open access): berghahnjournals.com/view/journals/…

The Founders would be astonished that in the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence, the Bishop of Rome would be... an American.
