Reasonable argument but important to acknowledge trade offs. 1. We are off track for a net zero aligned carbon price path by 2030. 2. A formal linking of UK ETS with EU will make the CPS redundant 3. 1:3.5 benefit/cost ratio ignores the levy on renewables that raised £bns

On 30 Sep 2024, the UK closed its last coal plant. This was the day we should have ended carbon price support – an extra tax to get coal off the grid. In the Budget, @RachelReevesMP has the chance to cut bills for millions + boost electrification, by ending CPS Here’s how:

Brilliant! This isn't some ingenous wholesale market reform though... just building out more wind+solar at pace that eats into fossil's share. UK geography doesn't help much but we're building fast nonetheless and will match spain, albeit gradually.

NEW ANALYSIS | Spain is successfully decoupling electricity prices from gas power costs 🇪🇸⚡️ Spain reduced the number of hours where electricity prices exceed gas costs by 75% since 2019. As a result, Spain's electricity prices were 32% lower than the EU average in H1-2025.

Sensible piece from Simon here, throwing in a reference to @NEF 's proposals for ways to reform the OBR. Read more here - neweconomics.org/2025/08/a-demo…

The OBR has no pre-ordained reason to exist in the UK’s economic framework. But if you want to abolish it, you do so from a position of strength, not weakness. The bond market is telling the government that it’s in a weak position. My thoughts in @thetimes thetimes.com/business-money…

I’m really proud to officially announce Students for Abundance! We’re bringing the movement to 12 campuses representing red and blue states, public and private schools, and institutions big and small. It should be easier to build the things people need to thrive (1/8)

The Office for Budget Responsibility has hardwired austerity into British fiscal policymaking. It is an independent institution with too much power and too little democratic scrutiny. It must go. My new report @NEF suggests what should replace it Thread ⬇️
