Hey everyone - that's right - totally thrilled to be in Brussels with a great team and really cool science!
Thrilled to announce 🎉 that Chris Smith (@chrisroadmap) has joined our Department of Water and Climate at @VUBrussel as a Senior Scientist! With a strong background in climate science, we're excited to have him on board. Welcome, Chris!

It's nice to see fair being used in the wild for novel climate attribution studies: "Half of anthropogenic warming now caused by fossil fuels" by Tarshish et al. preprint: eartharxiv.org/repository/vie…
Today: Northampton > London > Paris > Zürich. All by train!
Can all of the modelling groups who have run experiments looking at the IMO 2020 sulphur phase out in maritime fuel please come together and create... ShipMIP?
Thankfully, this is not at all consistent with numerous other constraints on climate sensitivity. These suggest 2-4 degC of global warming for doubling CO2, which is more than enough to worry about.
sigh, I had a similar paper rejected from ERL in 2021... admittedly my figures were nowhere near as sick
CO2 storage faces geological, geographical, and techno-economic limitations. This new feasibility study identifies a global benchmark of 5-6 GtCO2yr in 2050. Most IAMs do not take these constraints into account (see upper bounds of storage rates below) nature.com/articles/s4146…
At least if you are gonna rely on DICE, get the climate bit right iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108…
"You should never rely on the output of any single model. If you want to make sensible policy decisions, you need to use the insights from a range of models, but also from other approaches (history, geography, social psychology, & more)" @DimitriZ energiogklima.no/to-grader/inns…

Back when I was teaching, this was an excellent reference for my intro to physical climate module
If you use my book, Intro to Modern Climate Change, I've created a google group for it: groups.google.com/u/1/g/introduc… I will send out updates to the book to this list. I expect to send very few messages to the list, perhaps a few per year.
We have a 3-year postdoc position at CSIRO (Australia) to work on Remote sensing biomass and carbon budgets. Deadline for job application: 2 September 2024, 11:00 Australian Eastern Standard Time. jobs.csiro.au/job-invite/974…

I'd much rather my institute was giving money to anaconda than bloody microsoft
Hot take 🧵 on the @anacondainc academic licensing fiasco... Anaconda provides a huge amount of value to large, well-funded academic research institutions who are absolutely fine with paying big license fees to Mathworks, Intel, etc. for software. 1/
oh my, this is excellent. *this* is how you use fair to do climate policy analysis: kapiticlimate.substack.com/p/no-additiona…
BREAKING: @EuropeanSlpr to launch a Brussels-Venice train twice a week in February & March next year via the scenic Brenner Pass, with couchettes, sleepers & (yay!) dining-car. Fares tba, booking opens next month. Recommended Eurostar connection leaves London St Pancras at 11:04.
Dream funded !!research only!! PhD position going @IIASAVienna & @BOKUvienna this year with @shonali_p, others and I. Would suit someone interested in #inequality and #wellbeing. Take a look! Details in reply below.
alright then - here's the data github.com/chrisroadmap/c… slightly different to below - went from fitting an Etminan relationship (complexity not warranted by data) to a simple log, this removes the artefact in GISS-E2-1-H in SSP5-8.5 after 2100 if you use, let me know
for all those people still here... I came up with a neat way of estimating model-specific non-CO2 radiative forcing from SSP scenarios in ESMs. Would you find it useful? Is this worth devoting a week of my life writing a paper on it?
