As an iOS developer, what are some helpful tips you would pass down to a beginner looking for their first job? #SwiftLang #iOSDev
Seriously, make any app, and submit it to the App Store. Beyond checking a box, it gives you an understanding of how Test Flight works, Code Signing (to a degree), what App Store requirements are, and the process of resubmitting or updating your app. Invaluable tools.
Yes! Gives you insight into other parts of app development besides just code
For interviews, it's good to really understand how GCD works and where to use different queues other than the main queue. I keep coming back to this talk from @benasher44 whenever I need to refresh my knowledge from basics: softwaretalks.io/v/1639/grand-c…
Learn and read about programming in general; get out of the iOS bubble every once in a while. You will gain a better understanding of the field and you will get better at putting your iOS knowledge in perspective
I like that point about leaving your ios bubble. I do think it’s important every know and then.
Work on a hobby app to publish. Something fun to keep you motivated.
1. It's okay to not know something 2. Be patient 3. Actively seek and embrace feedback
Oh that first one is a good one, because it goes into peoples feelings of imposter syndrome!
Start sharing what you learn. Even if it’s something someone already has a blog or video about, if you sit down and explain it you’ll learn a lot. I think if you’re better at explaining why you did something it’ll make you better at your job when you have to explain your code.
Exactly, even in an interview when they ask you why you did something!
1. Have a portfolio. Show your interviewers you know how to code. 2. Contribute to open source libraries. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, but every little bit helps. 3. Attend swift meetups. Local swift communities are good sources of job postings.
I like the idea of attending meetups. Excellent networking opportunity.
Get ready to be asked to fetch JSON data, parse it into objects (Codable super powerful for that) and display them in a nice way inside an app. Classic Take Home Project. @seanallen_dev has a great course on this exact topic if you’re interested.
It’s ok to finish one or two tutorials from start to finish. After that look for answers! Your goal is to learn new skills not to complete as many tutorials as possible. And sometimes it’s ok to say screw this tutorial I’m going to implement it myself in a different way.
Have some project to show off and discuss. It doesn’t have to be complex, but make it polished.
Definitely agree! Your own project is more important than a tutorial project in my opinion
Create a side project where you can apply learnings, techniques and potentially showcase it. Playgrounds are also great to practice and explore Swift. Coding is not everything, try to work on soft skills as well. Embrace learning. You are going to get there 💪!!
Soft skills are important!! So many people over look working on them... even more advanced developers forget.
Don't take job requirements too seriously. Apply even if you don't know something. Your goal is to be better than other candidates, not to meet all the arbitrary requirements of a job description. I wish I knew it when looking for my first iOS dev job.
Keep learning and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Mmm yes, you can’t be afraid to ask questions... well just ask for help!
1-Must learn how to embrace the responsibilities as an iOS Developer. 2- Be positive and consistent on your learning goals . 3- how to handle the anxiety and pressure .
Make it your addiction to read documentation whenever you have time. It helps in lot of ways. Another is, browse through GitHub projects and look for what can you pick
Get your best hobby app in the appstore. Then you know exactly how the development and publishing process works. One of my first jobs was mostly managing post development. Be passionate about what you do. I have hired candidates based on that over more qualified people.
Mm that is def good insight, especially from someone who has made hires before!
Portfolio apps are important to understand app life cycle, but I think soft skills and eagerness to learn will get you the job over knowledge of a specific aspect of #iOSDev. iOS & #SwiftLang is constantly changing so learning new things is usually better than knowing old things.
Yeah in the tech world I don’t think we place emphasis on how important your soft skills are
