Too Late ...? #TLDR but better late than never #BLTN to share about our unique year and transition to virtual with the #CoderDojo community.
/ Just as we were all set to throw our 1st birthday party on Saturday March 14th, we’d to curb our enthusiasm, err on the side of caution to call off the celebrations. Disappointed but not out, we switched to virtual session that Saturday to test the waters for the first time.
/ Next week with a sense of what just was unfolding, we decided to host our sessions 3X/week (Yeah not a typo 🤔) to serve our young community who were suddenly home bound with school closures and no virtual learning in place yet.
/ April we launched the #LearningNinja challenge to encourage Ninja’s to commit their new found free time to creative computing adventures not YouTube. Introduced Lightning Talks by Ninjas, a 5-15 min talk on #STEM topic of their interest and #Kahoot Breaks were a hit.
/ For #DigitalMaker May challenge, we featured an HTML and #DesigningThinking workshop, latter not the easiest to facilitate virtually, bonus Maker badges, SalemStreetHack and month end celebrations worked to build engagement, play and sense of community. Back to 2x/week 😅.
/ To cap our extended Spring term, we decided to celebrate June with our very own #CoolestProjectChallenge with end of month Virtual Jam celebration. We grouped Ninjas into teams for their coolest project submission with many reservations and requests to work on solo projects
/ We encouraged them to collaborate as a team with the help of new volunteers and team break out rooms during our sessions. We’d 6 teams compete in our very own Coolest Project Virtual Jam with special judges from the community.
/ We were humbled by what Ninjas accomplished during the virtual Spring term. We would never have imagined back in March when we switched to virtual sessions that we would be ending our 2020 (extended) Spring term after having hosted 35 sessions with 70+ programming hours.
/ After a quick break we were back to kickoff a shorter Summer term in Aug and go on some creative computing adventures. No challenges just express with tech. We also featured Youth Hosts for our sessions and month end celebrations.
/ Our Fall term has 2 Units - #1 Level Up challenge encouraging ninjas to level up on their coding skills with Learning Paths and "Ninja Ambassador" (credit @Foustberrypi) skills by volunteering for the club #2 Our very own Coolest Project (team) Challenge and celebration.
/ We continue to tweak, learn and iterate activities to keep our community engaged and growing. Most importantly we celebrate their journey at each session, at our month and term end jams. #CoderDojo #onlinelearning #DojoBooChallenge . Let's Boo 🎃👻🎃👻
