Ten or fifteen years ago, test-driven development was considered a near requirement for serious developers. I don't see it discussed nearly as much these days. Everyone recognizes the value of tests, but the "test first" evangelism is almost completely gone.

“Serious developers” never did TDD. TDD was always about LARPing to feel like you are writing good code.

That’s not true. It was heavily and widely emphasized across the board. Definitely in some communities more than others, but still…

Yes, it was emphasized and practiced somewhat widely. But not by good engineers, because good engineers can easily see how it is a ton of busywork for small benefit.

Interesting. I’m curious how much this is a community-specific thing. For example, how different is the web app developer community from game developers? Quite the incredible bio, btw.

My memory of 2010, among web developers, is that the peer pressure to perform TDD was so incredibly great that you felt immense levels of shame if you didn’t.

I hear you both. But I think the concept of serious developers is going down the drain in terms of demand. I want folks who give a fk, are smart, and want to impact the business. Most engineers celebrate completing work in an elegant “serious” way - not the impact of their work…
