How do we do this "new" way of dividing?
Over the course of this year, our Math Learning Partners (MLPs) have had the incredible opportunity to learn with Dr. Ruth Beatty through a series of sessions focused on deepening mathematical understanding. In a recent session, Dr. Beatty guided us through powerful work on…

Honoured to emcee the 61st annual Aurora Art Show & Sale Opening Gala in partnership with SOYRA tonight at Town Hall. Congratulations to all the award winners—our community is truly filled with incredibly talented artists. Be sure to stop by Town Hall this weekend to see all the…

The double number line: quite "popular" among the @tdsb Gr. 3 students. An effective visual tool to help solve multiplication, division and ratio-related #math problems! @Jason_To @mervisalo @LizBHolder @TDSBmath

Despite the winter today, teachers in North York @tdsb had an energy-filled Day 2 Building Foundational #Math Skills! We analyzed the lasting usefulness of Up & Over 10 & Constant Difference & played games to promote (+/-) strategies. @TDSBmath @LizBHolder @mervisalo @Jason_To

Gr. 4/5s @TDSB Flemington PS practised equipartitioning a length w/ the Unit #Fractions Paper Strips task. This hands-on activity was engaging and super fun for all students & a great assessment opportunity for the teacher! @mervisalo @Jason_To @LizBHolder

Every time there’s been an A-ha moment, an understanding of the #math concept as a result of work with concrete objects, I thought of Maria #Montessori’s belief from almost 100 years ago: a child’s “hand activities” and “psychological development” are so closely entwined.

Constructive teacher conversations around multiple entry points @ Day 1 of Building Foundational #Math Skills in the Early Years. A very special Thank You to @TDSB_Gosford staff & students for hosting us in their beautiful library! @Jason_To @LizBHolder @mervisalo @ldilworth1

Valuable learning @TDSB_Topcliff PLC: Teachers & Admin observed a Gr. 3 class & reflected on lesson parts & #math environment & compiled elements to improve their math program. Ss’ engagement while solving & creating problems: Amazing! @Jason_To @LizBHolder @ldilworth1 @mervisalo

First thing in the morning today: Gr. 3/4s @StanleyPStdsb worked on solving problems and used Constant Difference to subtract numbers! So so proud of these kids!👏 @Jason_To @LizBHolder @ldilworth1 @mervisalo

So impressed by the Gr. 2s @tdsb Lamberton PS! Today, they told me that the triangle is the polygon with the least number of sides, 3. And all these names come from Greek! Here they are, constructing polygons with pattern blocks. @Jason_To @LizBHolder @ldilworth1

THANK YOU @TDSB North York teachers for engaging in today's math activities & games & the genuine conversations around the importance of building #math skills starting in the early years! A great way to slide into the Winter Holidays❄️ @Jason_To @mervisalo @LizBHolder @ldilworth1

Students @TDSB Ancaster PS & Sheppard PS enjoy collaborating with their friends when finding solutions to various types of problems. Even just a bit of planning time with the teachers has made a big difference in our work! @Jason_To @mervisalo @LizBHolder @ldilworth1

Such a pleasure to work together with all of my @TDSB_Topcliff partner teachers and their students! A space where everyone is enthusiastic for new learning and always eager to do #math! @Jason_To @mervisalo @LizBHolder @ldilworth1

A math-filled week: starting with a co-taught lesson to my former Ss, now in Gr. 6 @oakdale_park & continuing with great problem solving, deciphering pattern rules & playing Salute! Students’ engagement & enthusiasm: simply impressive! @TDSBmath @mervisalo @LizBHolder @ldilworth1

Day 4 #Fractions PD @TSDB North York Cluster. Teachers showed genuine collaboration & great determination to “unlock” multiplication and division by using visual representations. Thank you for joining us on this amazing math journey! @TDSBmath @mervisalo @LizBHolder @ldilworth1

Three ways we can think about fraction division:
Gr. 2&3s @StanleyPStdsb & @FlemingtonPS: Amazing how naturally multiplication happens with the help of growing patterns. 'Wow!' moments when students only take a few seconds to figure out the number of items in the 100th term! @Jason_To @mervisalo @ldilworth1 @LizBHolder

Late post, but had an amazing learning session with @ruthbeatty11 on progression from patterning to algebra. Easy strategies that can be used from elementary to high school!

Grateful for the opportunity to start the Patterns to Algebra work in Ms. Trinh’s Gr. 2/3 class @StanleyPStdsb. Students naturally shifting from additive to multiplicative ways of seeing patterns: such great learning for us all! @Jason_To @mervisalo @TDSBmath @ldilworth1
