A few things to know about the ATC reduction in flights: 1) This will be a nightmare for airline scheduling. We have reductions at some airports regularly through Ground Delay Programs (GDPs). Maybe 6 or 7 airports some days. 40 is WILD. 2) The airlines can’t “just cancel” 10%…
The FAA is ordering at 10% reduction in flights in 40 high volume markets starting Friday. DOT is not yet releasing the list but will brief airlines later today. This will result in thousands of cancellations starting Friday. The FAA says ATC fatigue and staffing are the issue
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation have directed every airline, across 40 U.S. airports, to meaningfully reduce their schedules during the government shutdown. The goal is to relieve pressure on the national aviation system to keep us…

. . . CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE MELISSA INTENSIFIES TO 185 MPH . . . - Date: October 28, 2025 - Time: 10:00 AM EDT (1400z) - Current Intensity: CAT 5 - Maximum Sustained Winds: 160 kt (185 mph) - Minimum Central Pressure: 892 mb - Forecast Peak Intensity: Category 5 (160 kt/185 mph)
Latest dropsonde now reveals a central pressure of 892mb. If this is true, this is now deeper than Milton (2024) and Rita (2005) by 3mb, and tied with the Labor Day Hurricane (1935).
#Melissa is now a sub-900mb hurricane with a pressure of 896mb and winds of 180mph. This is the strongest storm in the Western Caribbean since Allen (1980). Further intensification is likely, potentially rivaling some of the strongest Hurricanes in the Atlantic in history.
The presentation just keeps increasing, good lord. 892 mb, I wouldn't be surprised if we have 1-min sustained winds >=160 knots (>=185 mph).
I just got out of class, WHAT
DROPSONDE JUST CAME IN, PRESSURE TIES WITH LABOR DAY 1935 (892 MB)
BREAKING: Hurricane Melissa has reached 180 MPH maximum sustained winds and 896 mb of pressure, making it the 5th strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic Ocean.
BREAKING: Hurricane Hunters just found extrapolated pressure as low as 893mb in Melissa.
Hurricane Melissa could be one of the top 5 strongest hurricanes of all time in the Atlantic Ocean by pressure, possibly at 893mb.
HURRICANE MELISSA CRUSHES EYE DRYNESS RECORD!
