Video game idea: an NPC sends you on a bunch of fetch quests. You dutifully bring back items, thinking you're being helpful. Turns out the NPC is a clinical hoarder whom you've been enabling. It's tearing their family apart. You feel terrible about yourself. I would play this.
I once had a client, bless his heart, who had a secret compartment in his engine for drugs. After forty five minutes of searching with dogs, police couldn't find it. And so, like a man revealing his wife's birthday present, he told them. Because he was so proud of it.
Even the smartest criminals are kind of dumb, because if you just game out what happened in this case or any other similar case, you arrive right where we are, which is with the shooter in custody and multiple avenues of surveillance documenting his crimes in the hands of…
I hate the paternalism in tech. Did it ever occur to you I picked an insecure password because it’s easy to remember and I don’t care if an attacker logs in to pay my utility bill?
Why is there such a strong overlap between people exulting in political violence and people who would be too anxious to make a phone call?
You can be patriotic during times like these with zero contradiction. Heck, there's a saying that parents love their "problem child" the most; just as a mother loves her troubled, drug-addicted son, I love the United States of America.
I like the rule that every worker at a Mediterranean or Middle Eastern deli is required to call you "boss," and no one else.
In 2024, the US had its most peaceful year in terms of violent crime since man walked on the moon. The murder rate was the lowest since 2016, and the 5th lowest since 1965. Property crime is at its second lowest since records began.
I remember sitting down with somebody like this, and repeatedly trying to find common ground ("at least we can agree on X, right?"), and it felt like the other person was working hard to find reasons I couldn't be part of their side.
I've never seen a movement that so desperately does not want people to identify as a member of their movement as the left
This is beyond unthinkable today. Can you even imagine, a major river in the USA polluted to the point that it is literally red? This is around the same time it caught on fire. Absolute 3rd world conditions.
Congress just kicked 12 million people off Medicaid and increased the deficit by 4 trillion, and I can feel this site's algorithm desperately trying to distract me with dumb race-controversy stuff (NYC mayoral).
It's funny, the Beach Boys might easily be considered poseurs. Only one of them surfed... Countless odes to "lake pipes," "flathead mills," "magnesium spokes" when Brian barely knew about cars. And yet they came to embody waves and hot rods. Authenticity is overrated.
My feed right now is like 50% Beach Boys adoration posts... I am frantically liking all of them to push towards 100%.
Today we lost, probably, the greatest living musician.
It’s kind of messed up Brian Wilson died while I get to keep living because I didn’t even write one song on pet sounds
If Google was founded in the 1800s it would have been called General Search
This kind of zero-sum "scarcity mindset" is very common among the mass public, but much rarer among educated elites & politicians. The fact that Trump naturally speaks this language is a huge part of his appeal to the working class.
my trump headcannon is that he just doesn't grokk positive sum games in his mind, for you to win, someone else has to lose
Interesting question: what's the last time you've seen (in any context) someone face genuine consequences for lying?
Pioneer High School WINS the 2025 We the People State Finals. Second year in the program's existence. We are bound for D.C. in April!
Now that it's enough in the past, can we agree there was a spectacular flourishing of pop music from the mid 60s to the mid 80s that got ordinary non-musical people deeply invested in good music? In the same way normies got briefly interested in craft beer in the 2010s.
I've noticed an interesting trend in my politics. When I love my job and feel I've found "my place" in society, I become an instinctive defender of The Establishment—more invested in the status quo than reforms. My rational mind can see this change happening in my gut reactions.
