I’ve had teammates who vomit in the toilet before going out onto the pitch because they’re anxious. It’s time to acknowledge the systemic mental health issues within the sporting industry. Here’s my message to every football club on World Mental Health Day:
Please fix the issue where a player identifying with mental health issues is seen as a weakness at all levels. If you went to the manager and said “I’m really scared about Saturday’s game. I'm insecure, I'm nervous, I'm worried about failing, just don’t think I can do it”...
The reaction is most likely going to be “Ok, no problem, see you later”. You would then come out of the team and not be involved. And that’s not ok. That’s not how it should be.
Everyone is human with feelings and emotions. However in very few industries and at very few homes are these points discussed openly, so very few people understand how to deal and/or communicate with things when feeling a myriad of turbulent emotions and "abnormal" thoughts.
Mental health is rife within sport, and whilst clubs are now better, especially at the top levels, we need a united approach across all levels of the game.
