We are devastated to learn of Phil’s passage to the next life. We will miss his sharply dry humor, wry smiles and brilliant insights. Our hearts and our love go out to his beloved wife and family. He truly lived for them with all his being. His life’s work is a beacon for all…

Phil Lesh was my brother. Not by blood but still by family. I’ve heard so many of you tell me that the Grateful Dead changed your life. Yeah, well… Phil Lesh changed mine. Thank you Phil. I’ll miss you, darn it.

The Obvious, the Easy, and the Possible Much of the tension in product development and interface design comes from trying to balance the obvious, the easy, and the possible. Figuring out which things go in which bucket is critical to fully understanding how to make something…

Home grown talent is underrated:  I’ve noticed that the vc playbook when a new round is done is to recommend “upleveling” some of the home grown talent.  In some cases this might be right, but I think folks over index on it.  If you look at the executive teams of some of the best…

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. The #1, #2, #3 deciding factor of a startup’s success is the shipping velocity. Companies have no long term moat, the only moat is a fast shipping culture.

Alright I’m back and also hiring! Exciting new role opening up on the team for a super senior IC PM, working directly with me on our support experience. Looking for someone who can gsd, can build product and matching ops workflows, gets excited abt helping restaurants run.

What do product leaders use for roadmaps these days? We have outgrown our current homegrown solution and looking for options. I want simple now/next/later roadmaps, nested by Product Team, Product Group, Product Line. I don't want other bloat: OKRs, feature requests, etc.

I’m doing the same at @ToastTab The key: Small, autonomous teams, organized around customer problems. Ruthlessly remove dependencies among teams. Either via org design or services or capabilities investment.

HubSpot's a pretty big company (~8,000 people) but we've managed to avoid this death spiral. Things that have helped: 1) Small teams with high autonomy 2) Hold regular "science fairs" where teams show off what they *shipped* 3) Closely connect our product team to customers,…
