i feel like the purpose of critique is not at all well understood online. serious game criticism isn’t about streamlining a game to make it a better product, it’s a way of better understand why people feel the way they do about a given work of art.
Video games are unique. If you've never felt the beautiful artistry from interacting with the design of a game like Tetris, Pac-Man, DOOM, Super Mario Bros., or any other game Where You Just, Like, Play It, then you simply don't understand the value of games as a medium.

The video game writing discourse reveals how many people don't actually understand what makes writing well executed. If you think good writing in video games (AN INTERACTIVE MEDIUM) only extends to dialogue, you're missing the point.
I think the issue is less that "video game writing is bad" and more that "the standards for what is good video game writing are bad". There are lots of niche, obscure titles with really great writing; they're just not elevated in the same way that many AAA-produced titles are.
