Stats protip -- probability theory becomes a lot less mysterious and arcane if you separate out the theory (i.e. the axiomatic mathematical structure) from the philosophy (i.e. how the mathematical structure is applied to model actual systems).

At work, I say “on it,” way too often for someone who is not, in fact, on it.

Got an RNA-seq dataset with 50, 100, 200+ samples? Plug it into a differential expression tool and hope for the best? No! You need to consider QC, EDA, and modeling technical variation, or else risk generating spurious results. A thread on papers, methods, and best practices:

I can not stress enough this point: Literally every last person in the United States who complains about how “crowded” our cities are, is talking about cars. America is not crowded, anywhere. Half the land in our cities is four-lane roads and parking lots!!!!!!!!!

It's so alarming to see how fast this country's politicians unite around militarism and policing, when they can't unite on our basic needs like education, healthcare, or housing.

With inflation at 7.5%, you lose half your money in 9 years. The only way to outperform that consistently, that I have found, is crypto. Just this year I’ve already lost half my money.

Chipotle: 26% profit increase. Raising prices. Starbucks: 31% profit increase. Raising prices. McDonalds: 59% profit increase. Raising prices. Shell/Mobile/BP: 60% profit increase. Raising prices. There's not a labor shortage. This isn't inflation. It is 100% corporate greed.

so we can’t afford Medicare for All but we can afford to entirely subsidize a private company profiting from denying us healthcare?

There was a truly misguided and factually incorrect Wall Street Journal article yesterday claiming we should *accelerate* the spread of omicron. The authors fundamentally misunderstand the evolution of infectious diseases in a way I think many talking heads share. A 🧵

This article is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read and for the WSJ Opinion Page, that’s some rarefied bullshit air to breathe. Let’s start with the authors’ facile, incorrect understanding of how variants evolve.

The most important advice you can give to young scientists is that p-values less than 1 over the number of atoms in the universe mean you're using the wrong model.
