I am firmly opposed to @Keir_Starmer’s digital ID cards. It will make no difference to illegal immigration, but it will be used to control and penalise the rest of us. The state should never have this much power.

I don’t get why advocates of data centralization do not see the massive risks associated with centralizing citizens’ data or pulling it all into a single database managed by one authority. Risks of cyberattacks & governmental oppression in particular.
There seems to be something in Britain’s cultural DNA that is quite resistant to compulsory ID cards controlled by the government. I wonder why? I’m not asking about the reasons digital ID is problematic but why the UK is especially resistant to it.
