This is the longest piece I ever published, and with the New Yorker. “A Palestinian Poet’s Perilous Journey Out of Gaza” It’s about my painful experience of being separated from my family, beaten and shackled, as well as the terrorizing days before and after. It’s published…
One of my oldest friends, the novelist Paul La Farge, died this week. He was the charismatic and loving center of a vibrant group of writers and creatives for almost 30 years, and a great writer himself, especially about the secret and the strange. 1/3
My dad and best friend, John Bennet (@slothead) passed away peacefully at home, his family camped out around his bed. He loved my mom. He loved The New Yorker. He loved teaching young people. A charmed life for a poor kid from Athens, Texas. I was so blessed to have him as a dad.
"Riverman," by @mcgrathben, is a beautiful book, with shades of John McPhee and of Joseph Mitchell. It's out today: bookshop.org/books/riverman…
“There is a fine line between a man of exceptional courage and a damned fool.” I review Ben McGrath’s excellent book “Riverman,” about the vanished long-distance canoeist Dick Conant. nytimes.com/2022/04/03/boo…
Now we know exactly what #Linfield University is made of. Will fire an amazingly talented prof when he advocates for his students against sexual harassment & calls out anti-Semitism. We're with you @pollackpelzner oregonlive.com/education/2021…
Michael Quinn, a gay Chicano Mormon historian who got kicked out of the church but kept his faith, died last night, at 77. He led a remarkable life, marked by tragedy. His work will have a long legacy. Godspeed, Mike.
A lot has changed since the tense fights between Quinn and leaders in the 1990s, but his shadow still covers much of the field. @dbhaglund wrote an excellent summary of the legacy for Slate nearly a decade ago. /15 slate.com/human-interest…
He was super passionate about bicycling. If you're worried about "using" his death to demand that DC gets its act together on bicycle infrastructure, don't be—it's what he would've wanted. His last tweet was a joke about this very subject—so true to Jim.
Had to bike through a roundabout over a highway to get my Covid jab. Lifespan maximization function is clearly perfectly well-calibrated.
can’t believe I'm saying this, but I have a feature story on @NewYorker today!!! It's about a group of social workers who, in the early '70s, quietly licensed queer people as foster parents — creating some of the earliest state-recognized queer families: newyorker.com/news/us-journa…
Because the bureaucracy of official aid programs is difficult to deal with, and because that aid is insufficient anyway, people in rural KY rely on local anti-bureaucratic groups like Cranks Survival. Now, tho, these groups are struggling too newyorker.com/news/us-journa…

My dad died 5 yrs ago, but even b4 that, I don’t remember the last time I celebrated #fathersday. Tho my relationship w/ him was difficult & inconsistent, he believed I was a writer (said I got it from his side of the family). Here’s my poem abt/for him, in @NYTmag #FathersDay19

I wrote a feature about Julia Kristeva, Cold War spies, and old files for @NewYorker newyorker.com/news/dispatch/…
The ancient cedars of Lebanon have outlived empires and survived modern wars Clinging to shrinking patches of territory, these trees stand for Lebanon’s resilience Now, #climate change is pushing them to the brink and could finish them off buff.ly/2LjOr6r #CedarsOfGod

This has become the commonplace interpretation of Sandy Hook and its aftermath. It isn't true. If you can see past inaction at the Congressional level, not unique to guns, Sandy Hook radically changed the gun debate in the ensuing five years, across the political spectrum.
In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.
Father, who says he's a local peanut farmer in Wicksburg, outside Roy Moore rally talks about losing his gay daughter at age of 23 to suicide. "I was anti-gay myself. I said bad things to my daughter, which I regret."
